Her name is Kardiari, from Central Bali near Ubud. She is from a family of woodcarvers—her great grandfather plied the trade generations ago, and the skill has been handed down. Currently, she and her two younger brothers each run a wood carving shop on the same street. Kardiari has a love of learning about international cultures, and is married to a French man who runs a restaurant in Bali. She lived in Germany for two years and has traveled to many European countries. Kardiari speaks five languages.
Although she and her brothers have had the good fortune to travel and obtain a good education, Kardiari never loses sight of the fact that her illiterate parents slaved all their lives so that their children could gain the advantages in life they never had. Kardiari is extremely open and personable, but if there’s one trait she has no tolerance for, it’s arrogance. Because she never forgets her humble roots. In high school, she was selling her family’s wood carvings on the street to help pay for her brothers’ education. When asked what she would do if she had great success with her business, Kardiari responded that she had simple goals: to gain a good education and living standard for her kids if she has any in the future, and to help those around her. The carvings in Kardiari’s shop are enchanting, everything from abstract figure sculptures to windscreens to mirror frames to animals to chairs shaped like a hand. Kardiari hopes you like her family’s work.
